Before i start i should tell you that my usual way is to do my best to let kids work things out amongst themselves – or so i tell myself anyway. When it’s my two kids arguing, i step back and let them end it (as long as they are being fair to each other i figure it’s a learning experience).
The thing is, when it’s not my 7 year old’s 5 year old sister bugging him, i really, REALLY do want to step in and “fix” things (or just “fix” the kid who’s bugging my child – go ahead and judge me, if you disagree i’d have to assume that you don’t have kids this age yet or have somehow not gotten the “OH NO YOU DID NOT JUST … TO MY KID” gene. I myself have a generous amount of said gene, but i digress…)
Where i’m going with this (i promise i’m going somewhere LOL), is here…
having repeatedly heard about one boy in particular at school who was bullying my son, I really had had enough. It didn’t matter what we suggested to Matt, “the boy” just kept picking at him and Matt was starting to dread school and THAT is not good.
Unfortunately, from the comfort of my couch at 7pm, i can’t really do anything about the bully anyway 
I’ve learned that you can tell your child to “walk away” until you are blue in the face and, even if said child really does take your advice and walk away, the bully will not be deterred – he will pursue his prey until he has had his fill.
It was frustrating to say the least to hear about all the things each day wishing that i could have just been there to say something… I really didn’t know what though, but something to “the boy” bugging my son. And then it happened…
I stopped by Matt’s class one day to give him something he had forgotten at home. All the kids were in the hall getting ready for recess. The hallway was really crowded so i stepped to the side to let everyone by and then “the boy” came up to Matt, right in his face, and started to yell (and yes, i mean yell, not “talk loudly”) about how Matt wouldn’t be on his team and he was no good and he’d get splattered etc. etc. until i loudly, right above “the boys’” face said “WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT HIM LIKE THAT????” “that’s not nice and not necessary at all. Go out and play.”
I’d like to say he was nice to Matt after that but it didn’t change much. But man did it help me (and i think Matt enjoyed it too) LOL. “The boy” froze and just stared up at me. Then he turned and left. I was happy that at least for that one time, i could stick up for my son.
Now, if only they would let me trail him at recess but apparently hanging out with Mommy isn’t cool. Imagine!!
